GD Star Rating 1.0.2

datePosted on 02:00, November 12th, 2008 by Millan

New version is here. First of all, I have fixed all bugs I have found related to rating rules. But, the most problems are coming from the fact that I have added some improvements with previous version that required for blog admins to review settings of the plugin and check if things are ok. Anyway, I have fixed things I have found so far to be problem.

So, please review the settings after updating plugin, check if things are set as they should be. If you still have problems, please use the forum and describe the problems in more details, include your settings (screenshots will work) so I can hunt the bugs. Also, check the user guide it’s very detailed.

This version includes some very important new features, and also partial implementation of features planned fo the future versions announced in roadmap for the plugin development. So, read on to find out what’s new.

Comment Review Rating

Few people asked for a feature that will allow the commenters to review the post they are commenting. So, now that can be done. It will require to expand theme to include this feature. You can check how it looks like on this website, I have added this to my Starscape theme used on this blog.

User Rating Managment

New panel is added, and this panel displays list of all users that voted, number of ip addresses used and other info. Next version will include options: IP ban, vote deletion and more.

Categories Based Voting Rules

New panel will be used to set voting rules on the category base. This way post rules can be inheritet from categories rules, and this make it easier to manage rules for a blogs with a lot of posts and categories. This is not done yet, but hopefully it will be operational soon.

Admin Interface

I have changed some things in the interface, and added more options that should simplify things. More things, options and panels can be hidden if they are not needed. Check out the settings panel general and integrate tabs and turn on or off things you need or don’t need. More details about this are included in user guide.

WordPress 2.7

Also, I was trying to work with some of the new issues with upcoming WordPress 2.7. I have fixed most issues I have found so far, and a big thanks goes to Lester Chan for helping me in solving the problem with comment editor admin page.

So, that’s all for now, hopefully new version will be out soon.

Lets see how the comment review rating works! Can these ratings be combined with the overall post rating? That would be very useful, or the total of all the reviews displayed in the post?

I am planning to expand usability of this feature. Also, you can edit your review rating when you edit comment.

    Milan,
Thanks for implementing this useful feature!
Will we have to edit comments.php in future versions?

To add comment review, theme must be changed, there is no other way. THe biggest problem is upcoming WordPress 2.7. I have yet to find the way to change new comment loop. WP 2.7 and themes with standard comment loop will work fine.

Oops me too, forgot to review. Maybe we can change the “Rating” text and make it bold?
And I don’t think I can edit my comments, Milan. I don’t see where!

Logged in users should be able to edit their comments. There should be edit link with each comment.

There is no edit link, Milan.
And like BWRic said, the combined average of all the commentators’ reviews should be shown where starrater is rendered now. But I guess you know that already. :-P
The reason I asked about editing the comments.php is that with WP Ajax Edit Comments plugin, for example, you don’t have to do it. But I am no coder, and the 2 plugins might be totally different.
Thanks for the wonderful plugin, it gets better and better with each new release!

    Hi Millan / All

I wanted to first of, thank you for your wonderful plug in. It is indeed a neat plug in.
Secondly, I would like to make available my “pentagram” stars I created for GD Star Rating. It can be viewed and downloaded at the following link:

I hope with this, I can add to your already excellent plug in.

    Best regards,
    Erus

@Glotis: You are right, subscribers can’t edit their comments. I never used WP Ajex Edit Comments plugin, so I am not sure how to add Star Rating to it.

@Erus: I will like to add this set to a list of additional graphics I have on my site if it’s alright with you. Hopefully we will see more sets available soon.

Milan, I was just stating the fact that WP Ajax Edit Comments doesn’t require editing any files. I don’t want to add starrating to it.
GD Star Rating is great the way it is, and getting better! I even like editing my website’s files. This way I learn how my site works. Some potential users may not like this though, a lot of people don’t like editing core files because you have to edit them again each time you update WP.

@Glottis: As I said I don’t know what WP Ajax Edit Comment does, but the way WordPress themes normally work, comment form MUST be in comments.php.

Maybe more theme authors will be willing to add this to their themes, since it’s very easy to integrate, and there are instructions in the user guide.
